Diploma degree in Electrical Engineering with specialisation in Communication Engineering from the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH) in 1981. PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Vienna in 1987; PhD thesis topic: "A method for simultaneous stimulation of several channels for cochlear implants". From 1986 to 1988 lecturer of Digital Signal Processing at the University of Innsbruck and consulting engineer for 3M Company, St. Paul, USA in the field of cochlear implants. Since 1988 employed at Cochlear AG in Basel; since 2001 in the position Head of Clinical, Technical, Research and Regulatory for Cochlear Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Responsibilities include Clinical Research, Clinical & Technical Support, Learning & Development, Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs for Cochlear EMEA. Ernst holds five patents, has contributed to 30 peer reviewed publications and gave more than 100 presentations in the field of cochlear implants.
